A material used to make watch crystals. The terms synthetic sapphire and sapphire are used interchangeably when speaking of watch crystals. All sapphire watch crystals are made in a laboratory/factory environment, and are therefore referred to by Sierra Trading Post as "synthetic sapphire." Because of its very high hardness (9 on the Mohs scale), sapphire watch crystals more scratch-resistant and abrasion-resistant than mineral glass. However, sapphire crystal is also more brittle than mineral glass, and therefore is slightly less resistant to heavy impacts.
